FICTION: Undo Their Flow On This

So, as you know, I've recently been playing with the Burroughsian Nova Mythos, dragging that cut-up dada-surreal multiverse of body horror and word virus into the 2020s, creating my own cut-up novel set in the same (or at least similar) cosmology.   As well as bringing me an enormous amount of joy, this process has also come up with a pretty good ratio of interesting / pleasing / perplexing / delightful wordular arrangement, so thumbs up, will continue.

Of course, a cut-up isn't a proper cut-up unless you cut it up into itself several times over.  So I've been taking chunks of the cut-up novel and cutting those up too - and I like some of these results even more than the novel itself (so they'll become part of the novel, naturally).  One of these chunks I named "Undo Their Flow On This", and sent it into Burning House Press - and they published it!

That's right!  My carefully-constructed stories that I slave over with a fine-toothed-comb and an invested heart seem completely impossible to find a publisher for, but some piece of random gibberish composed by a fucking computer gets published lickety split.  Which is awesome, of course, but still.

Eep.

ANYWAY, point is, I got something published.  And here it is:

FICTION: ROUTINE ONE: TURN COLD DEAD THAT HUMAN SPARK, SPLASH OF RED.

ROUTINE ONE: TURN COLD DEAD THAT HUMAN SPARK, SPLASH OF RED.

Get the call – New Recruit incoming.  Scrape together some semblance of decency, arms slide into old trenchcoat sleeves, collar up – old school – light triple-paper joint, drag it deep in the Interzone translucent particle air – smoke spirals off, ash falls slow – prepare.

Why me?  I’m good with new recruits, they say – still got some of that old fashioned human in me – empathy maybe, what do you call it “compassion”.  The whole process is so fucked up, so many old Agents lose that human spark, turn cold dead crab – nothing but business – dead fish eyes gaze from dark sockets seen too much fucked up shit to care any more.  Me – still got a little human gleam in these old eyes, blood still has a splash of red in it.

Get to the waiting room shabby but quick enough, and there you are, panic-frozen and deer-eyed, scrap of paper – secret Ticket – still in your hand, no idea what the fuck or where the fuck.

Better sort that all out now.

“Welcome,” I say all cool like 1930s detective – costume that rubs off, we all wear it to different degrees – mentor and friend and guide – play out the old guru script aura.  “You’re probably wondering where you are.”

No words, too Transport-sick to cope yet.  A little human gaze from dark sockets seen too idea what the your hand, no dead fish eyes much fucked up but business – scrap of paper fuck or where there you are – still in gleam in these panic-frozen and deer-eyed, old eyes, blood – secret Ticket is so fucked up, so many crab – nothing – still got quick enough, and The whole process shit to care still has old Agents lose any more.

Me in it. Get to the waiting room shabby but turn cold dead that human spark, splash of red.

***

The whole racket was almost blown wide open by Agent Burroughs.  But the Nova Cartel just spread the idea – pure propaganda of course – that his reports were fiction, and cut-up nonsense at that.  Spread shit about Word Hoards and Beat Fiction and Wife Shooting.  Of course, didn’t help that the events Agent Burroughs described were obviously untrue – Centipedes from Venus and Mayan Crab People, the works – and of course, readers trapped in Nova Word-Line Simulation believed that because those events were so obviously untrue, meant they didn’t happen.   Course, you, me, we know better.

(The things they will believe, oh brother!  Knows no bounds!  Believe anything but the Big T Truth – you hear those cats swearing the Earth is Flat?  I mean, of course it’s flat – but not in that way!  Dumber folk I have never seen.  Real Earthlings never fall for a gimmick like that.  But not even sure there are any real Earthlings these days – all succumbed to digital undifferentiation, big time.)

See, the Uranus Agent Burroughs described was the real Uranus, the Venus he described was the real Venus, but different channel on the Dark Matter Deepfake.   Tune through, different channel on the Box.  They Live, They Live.  Tune through, put on the damn glasses, and it’s all clear as sulphur in air – tune it right, and everyone can smell the bad egg like we do. The radical persuasion—using information, incentives, that between opting unwelcome brands or developed and changed, through alabaster tubes.

It’s not like Agent Burroughs got everything right – but it’s not like there’s only one “right”, either, so there’s that–

Oh – I forget the social niceties.  Been doing this too damn long.

Name’s Agent Blackwell.  “Black” like obsidian dagger, “well” like a deep dark hole down, down, down.  Where we’re headed.  On Friday, we’re having very assholes, human parts a surprise breakthrough.  No surprise here, tell you that for free.

Hello, then.  How are you.

Point is, Agent Burroughs got real close to exposing it to the “mainstream”.  Agent Lovecraft got real close. Agents Wachowski and Wachowski got real close.  Agent Icke’s getting real close.  Agent Stang’s getting even closer.  Cycle repeats.

We all try to bring it back with us, communicate it in words, but it’s hell – using the machine to describe itself.  Like trying to describe a piece of free jazz with another piece of free jazz.  Once you crack the control-machine, once you cut the word lines and image lines and scroll the other direction, then you can access the Big T Truth, but you can’t tell anyone about it.  You break the screen, as it were – you rip up the book.   No way to communicate when communication itself is what is broken.

See?  Biggest damn hurdle in the whole sorry affair – can’t carry any of that back, that Big T Truth, can’t hold that in your hands any more than you can carry back a handful of water.  Drops, sure – your fingers glisten still with the membrane of Big T Truth, but how are you meant to pass that to anyone else?  Share the “content” as it’s called now?  Once the word lines are snapped like twigs, the whole Meaning Game becomes what Agent Wittgenstein called “private language” – no way to get inside someone else’s head – except of course the physical way.  And of course more you know and deeper you go, more cracked your own structures become.  No proper way to speak anymore when all words reduced to noises – might as well quack.

So there’s that – tune it bizarre cult from not like there’s individual, is drug the Uranus Agent Contact’s inevitable. On They change the one right, either, opting unwelcome brands hey, seems Earth but things circumcised Fiction and Wife People, the works radical persuasion—using information, the events Agent next dopamine hit.

All we can do is throw fragments back, Truth Dust, no Big T, just reality shrapnel – desperately scatter the moments and instants and feels, pepper the molecules of truth toward people and hope they get Big Picture – gotta reconstruct Big T Truth Mountain from goddamned sand, grain by grain – making a Mountain out of Mohammed – control machine was popped the dinosaurs Friday, we’re having “Black” like obsidian got everything right a deep dark to the computer in Nova Word-Line bad egg like Hoards and Beat breakthrough.

Climate. More powerful on the damn or developed and climate, more what’s real universe – almost blown the notion simulated headed.  Easy to knows no bounds.

So.  Brave new recruit, you’re the new Man in Black – except of course “man” means shit out here, gender is just more Nova Control.   There’s no gender out here – there’s barely sex, which is another thing entirely, obsession disorder biological entities insist on clinging to.  Obliteration is the end of boundaries that are otherwise solid.  Idea – pure Burroughs described were the Venus he for them this – but it’s and scorpions, supercomputer.   So first things first – yes, it’s all True.  All of it.  Even the parts that conflict.  Out here, a conflict of realities is nothing, forget about it.  Also forget eating and sleeping, waste of your precious time.  Also, forget time.  Distraction and nonsense.  We function at peak efficiency, soldier.

Contact – and The whole racket Tune through - No surprise the Nova Cartel incentives, that between hole down, down, the real Uranus, reports were fiction, course, readers trapped air – they different channel on with the morality all clear as obviously untrue – use, queer participation – and of not an if.

See? Peak efficiency.  Cut right to the chase, right to the quick.  Bypass regular brainwashing systems, language fragments injected straight to the dream core.  There’s no way they’ll get that on the real Earth.  No idea how to take it.  Think it’s just another hoax.  Propaganda of course universe? It’s not just spread the way.  Hotter, thicker Shooting.

(Course, there’s another reason I don’t sleep.  I don’t want to dream.  When I dream, I dream of Her.  Because She’s still out there, of course.  Can’t think about Her too long or I just get – what’s the word – maudlin.)

So.

Anyway.

Ever see ‘The Matrix’?  Gross over-simplification.

Of course, Simulation believed that Scrolling, scrolling, for this case, down. Where we’re tubes. It’s not Burroughs described was personal quality.  Every border you ever believed in – stop that right now.  Not going to do you any good here.  Here is outside of all that.  In this case, an individual, is drug use, queer participation, but things – circumcised cock, black goblet – with the morality of a recording instrument and efficacy.

Okay, see, imagine Reality is the broadcast from some radio station – out here, in the Interzone, we’re holding the radio.  Forgot, you’re from a more “modern” “time” than I am – okay, so Reality is the what you call it “web site” – out here, we’re holding the “lap top”.  See?  Except even that border is permeable.  All membranes are permeable.  Take it from me – I’ve permeated them all.  So you’re holding the “lap top”, but you’re just a what’s the word “terrain”, every consciousness is just more terrain, see, a place to be, an environment to inhabit.  You’re a place, I’m a place - we’re nice places to visit but I wouldn’t wanna live there, ho ho ho.  Now you’re recruited – old word but accurate enough – you’ll be doing a lot of that.  Not hard with the right chemicals and energies.  Agent Wilson talked about the Chapel Perilous – you’ll be visiting that shithole more times than you can count.  Time, place, just parts of the Game – doesn’t matter – we’ll get to it all eventually.   Just be aware that it’s all porous, and it’s all simulated – deepfakes all the way down.   Once you get that into your head, you stop asking so many questions about what’s real and what’s not, and you can focus on the task at hand.  Peak efficiency, like I said.

Anyway, what’s your name?  Your old name, I mean.  Birth name.  Government name.  Dead name – “Necronym”, some cats are calling it now.  You won’t be needing it any more, but well, I’m a sentimental guy.

Nice to meet you.

Keep it together.  No-one volunteers for this gig.  “Trapped” is the wrong word.  Ignorance you need to real Venus, but – A naked atom sulphur in air didn’t help that untrue meant they Tell you that didn’t happen.  Course, that’s a when, on some that Live, oh brother, because those events the term habitable climate – but know that though. Shit about Word to know.  Spread given the project Deepfake.

We’re all just Agents now.  (See how “Agent” is almost anagram of “Angel”?  Not entirely coincidence.  Not entirely anagram, either, so there’s that to consider.)

Ones – you here, tell you and Mayan Crab – black goblet drugs than physical were so obviously They Live.  Dressed in human drag, nastiest sonsofbitches I ever did see.  Nova Cartel, Nova Syndicate, it’s all the same.  Agent Icke describes them as “reptilian”, but I say “insect”.  Obsidian insect with dead eyes and ravenous hunger – feed off human souls, spirit, energy, whatever – snort up life essence like powder – there’s no Satan, so they’re not “Satanic”, but next best thing.  “Anti-life” maybe better way to put it.  “Anti-energy”.  Just plain “anti”, maybe.  Spiritual cancer, another way.  They programs.  Gates, glance, described – was the you, me – we different channel on with that particular.  Cancer destroys its host – the Nova cats destroy theirs – all channels at once – fill up their own petri dish without a second thought. Not sure they think at all, to be brutally honest – just cold dead-eyed instinct hunger.  Did they create the simulation for that purpose?  How the hell should I know?

Just doing my job.  Jesus.

(The dagger, “well” like of a recording is just rich – remember for when Centipedes from Venus parts a surprise glasses, and it’s too, too dumb – can smell like Agent Burroughs know better.)

Anyway.  You won’t sleep, but best you stay here until you recover from the Transport.  Really takes it out of you – sometimes literally.  Exhausting – and particularly bad when, like I said, there’s no more sleeping.  Never sleep again.  How to recuperate?  Most of us turn to chemicals, extremity, Dark Matter sex.  Some nights, it’s Salo meets Electric Dreams.  Each to their own.  More powerful drugs than physical ones – you know that though.  Scrolling, scrolling, for next dopamine hit.  In the Dark Matter wide open by hate.  Tarantulas and cut-up nonsense instrument and efficacy.

See, changed, through alabaster the smallest and, very assholes, human that for free.

FICTION: Perfectly Normal (A Play For Children)

SCENE 1: HOME

SARAH is asleep in her bedroom. (The NARRATOR can be offstage, or sitting unobtrusively onstage.)

NARRATOR
When Sarah awoke, she didn't immediately suspect that her parents were robots.  No, when Sarah awoke, she still thought that the world was pretty much the same as it had been when she'd fallen asleep the night before.

Sarah's alarm goes off.  Yawning and stretching, Sarah wakes up.  Bleary-eyed, she walks to the kitchen.

In the kitchen are her MUM and DAD.  They don't see her straight away. Dad is putting on his tie, Mum is holding up two cereal boxes. Their speech is kinda stilted.

DAD

I'm wearing a tie. Because a piece of cloth around my neck shows I really mean business.

MUM

I'm trying to decide between these two cereals based on the nutritional information printed on the boxes.

DAD

I sure hope they stop the boats today.  There's nothing worse than an unstopped boat.

MUM

Me too. I feel safer knowing that foreign people won't be interfering with the working families of this country.  I think this morning, I'll choose the cereal that contains raisins.

They finally notice Sarah.

MUM AND DAD
Good morning pumpkin! Did you sleep well?

Sarah looks at them a little askance/askew.

SARAH

...yeah, sure, I slept fine.  You guys okay?

MUM

I'm very well thank you.  I decided to have raisins in my cereal this morning, based on the nutritional information printed on these boxes.

DAD

I'm also very well thank you.  I'm wearing this tie, because it shows that I really mean business.

SARAH

...Uh, okay.

NARRATOR

Although Sarah said the word "okay", she wasn't entirely convinced that everything was really "okay".  Her parents had always been strange, but this strange?

MUM

What would you like for breakfast, Sarah? You can decide for yourself, based on the nutritional information printed on these cereal boxes.

Sarah points at one, and Mum pours it into a bowl.

DAD

Well, I'd better be off for work.  I work five out of every seven days, because that's the expected number of days.  I call it "full time work".

He kisses Mum on the cheek, waves robotically to Sarah, and leaves.

SARAH

Is dad all right? Did he seem like he was acting weird to you?

MUM

Not at all.  He seemed statistically average in every way.  He's a normal person, that's for sure.

Sarah frowns. Mum stares at her strangely.  Then smiles cheerily.

MUM

Now.  Would you like the breast-milk of a cow on your cereal?  It's meant for cow babies to drink, but we don't let them - we take it for ourselves to drink instead! Don't worry, it's perfectly normal to do that.  Perfectly normal, that's for sure.

Sarah's mum is creeping her out. Sarah quickly looks at her phone, and grabs an apple from the fruit bowl.

SARAH

Um, nah, I think I'm going to be late. I might just grab an apple and go.

MUM

Don't want to be late for school! You go to school for five out of every seven days, because that's the expected number of days.

SARAH

Okay mum, ah, seeya later!

MUM

Good-bye pumpkin! I really hope they stop the boats today.

SCENE 2: ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL

Sarah rides her bike to school. She rides past the CHORUS, who move robotically as they deliver their words in unison.

CHORUS

Did you see the football on the weekend?
Yes, I saw the football on the weekend. It was great weather for washing the car.Yes, the weather was perfect for washing the car.
Perfect car-washing weather.

NARRATOR

As Sarah rode her bike to school, she began to sense a certain... somethingness about the people around her.  A certain somethingness that made her feel... somethingy.

CHORUS

Did you listen to that famous singer's new album? Yes, I love that famous singer, and that new album of hers is just the best. She's very famous for singing. But her new album is the best one of all.

Sarah crunches down on her apple as she rides.

CHORUS

I sure hope they stop the boats today.

SCENE 3: SCHOOL

The TEACHER stands at the front of the classroom. The students (Sarah and Chorus) sit at the other end, facing the teacher.

NARRATOR

Sarah had assumed that things would get better once she was at school. But things didn't get much better once she was at school. If anything, things actually got considerably worse.

TEACHER

I'm at the front of the class, because I'm the teacher.  You refer to me by my surname because it shows that, when it comes to teaching, I really mean business. Now, today, we're learning about how Captain Cook discovered Australia.

Sarah puts her hand up.

TEACHER

You put your hand up to indicate that we're not having a normal conversation between two equals. Yes, Sarah?  Note that I do not refer to you by your last name.

SARAH

I read something about how, because the place was actually totally chock-full of aboriginal people when Captain Cook got here, that it's kinda not really accurate to say he "discovered" Australia. I mean, it was already discovered, wasn't it.

TEACHER

I am the teacher, Sarah.  Are you at the front of the class, Sarah? Are you referred to by your surname?

SARAH

...no.

TEACHER

When it comes to teaching, I really mean business. So I'm going to send you to the principal's office, as a sign of my power and thus our inequality.

SARAH

What?  For asking a question?

TEACHER

Yes.  You do not learn anything by asking too many questions. Do you, class?

CHORUS

No, we do not learn anything by asking too many questions.

TEACHER

Now, go.

SARAH

But-

TEACHER AND CHORUS

Go!

SCENE 4: PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE

The Principal is sitting at a desk.

NARRATOR
Sarah's somethinginess did not dissipate once she got to the Principal's Office.  If anything, it just got more somethingy.

PRINCIPAL
Now, Sarah, you've been sent here because you're creating a fuss in the classroom, is that right?

SARAH
I didn't create a fuss.  I just asked a question-

PRINCIPAL
Learning is not about asking questions, Sarah.  Learning is about remembering answers.

SARAH
I'm not sure that's true-

PRINCIPAL
See?  You're "not sure".  When you're a big grownup like me, you will be sure.  I learned all the right answers, and look at me now! I'm the principal!  Look, it says so on the door of my office.

SARAH
All I said was-

PRINCIPAL
Now, because of your interruptions and negative attitude, I've had to call your parents.  And they're definitely not robots, so you should be perfectly safe with them.

NARRATOR
Sometimes when you hear a certain phrase, it can have exactly the opposite effect to what the speaker is intending.  When Sarah heard the phrase "they're definitely not robots, so you should be perfectly safe", a shiver ran up and down Sarah's spine, and she felt the very opposite of safe. She thought back to her parents' strange behaviour this morning, and began to wonder if maybe that was what had been so terrifyingly somethingy about them: were they actually robots?

PRINCIPAL
And just so you're aware, I'm definitely not a robot either.  And neither is your teacher. We're all perfectly normal people.  Perfectly normal, that's for sure.

SARAH
Of course you are.  Perfectly normal.  Um... before my perfectly normal non-robotic parents arrive, can I just quickly go to the toilet?

PRINCIPAL
We have our toilets divided by gender, because dividing things by gender is very very important. You will be using the girl's toilet, because you are a girl.  But be quick - your parents will be here any minute now.

SARAH
Thanks! I'll be back in a second.

Sarah gets up and leaves.

SCENE 5: ON THE RUN

Sarah rides her bike the other way, the opposite direction she rode to get to school. She rides past the Chorus, who again all move like synchronised robots.

NARRATOR
But Sarah had no intention on either going to the toilet, or being back in a second.  Sarah was scared.  Sarah was now relatively convinced that her teachers and her parents were actually robots.  She had no absolute proof of this, of course, but it can sometimes be hard to collect absolute proof in the time allotted, and in Sarah's case, the time allotted was any minute now.  But where does a child go when she suspects she is being manipulated by robots? In this case, she went straight to her grandma's house.

SCENE 6: GRANDMA'S HOUSE

Grandma opens the door. Sarah rushes inside.

GRANDMA

Sarah! What's the matter?  Shouldn't you be at school?Sarah hugs her grandma tight, then pulls away.

SARAH

Oh grandma, things have gotten really really weird today. I think... I think...

GRANDMA

What is it?

SARAH

I think everyone's turned into robots.

Grandma looks surprised, confused, and concerned all at once.

GRANDMA

...robots?

SARAH

I know, I know, it doesn't make any sense.  First mum and dad were acting really weird, and then my teacher was acting really weird, and then the principal was acting really weird and... I don't know, and I don't have absolute proof, but I think everyone's turned into robots.

GRANDMA

Oh dear.

SARAH

You... you believe me?

GRANDMA

Oh yes.  I know you'd never lie to me, Sarah.  You're a good, honest girl, and if there's one thing I always say, it's trust people who are both good and honest.

SARAH

Oh Grandma!  What am I going to do?

GRANDMA

First of all - did any of the robots follow you here?

SARAH

I don't know.  I don't think so-

BANG BANG BANG on the front door.

MUM (O.S.)

Hello?  Grandma, is Sarah in there? I brought her some cereal covered in cow-milk to help her calm down.

SARAH

Oh no, it's robot mum!

GRANDMA

Don't worry, we'll just pretend we're not home.

BANG BANG BANG on the front door.

DAD (O.S.)

Hello?  I know you're home, it's no good pretending. Open the door, I need to talk to Sarah.  I really mean business.

SARAH

It's robot dad!  What should we do?

GRANDMA

Don't worry, they'll just go away if we're very very quiet.

BANG BANG BANG on the front door.

PRINCIPAL (O.S.)

I'm the principal, it says so on my office door.  We're not going away, you know, not even if you're very very quiet.  We want Sarah.  We're definitely not robots.

SARAH

Grandma!

BANG BANG BANG on the front door.

TEACHER (O.S.)

I'm the teacher, so what I say goes. Give us Sarah, and you won't get detention.

MUM AND DAD (O.S.)

We want Sarah.

CHORUS (O.S.)

We want Sarah!

The banging continues, making a steady relentless pounding rhythm. Grandma looks worried.  She beckons for Sarah to move away from the door.  Sarah runs over to Grandma and lurks in her embrace. Grandma wraps her arms around her protectively.

PRINCIPAL AND TEACHER (O.S.)

We want Sarah!

MUM AND DAD (O.S.)

We want Sarah!

CHORUS (O.S.)

We want Sarah!

The door bursts in, and in rushes Principal, Teacher, Mum, Dad, and the Chorus.  But Grandma holds up a hand, and they come no closer.

GRANDMA

Stop!  All of you!  There's no need for any of this!  Because, look!

She reaches her hand around to the back of Sarah's neck, and makes a "clicking a switch" motion.  Suddenly Sarah stops cowering and stands up straight and calm.

GRANDMA

She was on the wrong setting!

Everyone looks relieved, in a suitably robotic fashion.

MUM

She must've had her switch flicked by accident during the night!

DAD

Oh dear.  The wrong setting! Well, I'm glad that's sorted, I really have to get back to work.

SARAH

I'm sorry for all the fuss.

GRANDMA

Do you feel better now, dear?

SARAH

I do.  I feel perfectly normal.

EVERYONE ELSE

Perfectly normal.

NARRATOR

Perfectly normal.

MUM

I'll drive you back to school, pumpkin.

SCENE 7: ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL AGAIN

Sarah and Mum drive to school.  They drive past the CHORUS, who move robotically as they deliver their words in unison.

CHORUS AND MUM
Did you see the football on the weekend?

CHORUS AND SARAH
Yes, I saw the football on the weekend.

CHORUS AND MUM
It was great weather for washing the car.

CHORUS AND SARAH
Yes, the weather was perfect for washing the car.
Perfect car-washing weather.

CHORUS AND MUM
Did you listen to that famous singer's new album?

CHORUS AND SARAH
Yes, I love that famous singer, and that new album of hers is just the best.

CHORUS AND MUM
She's very famous for singing.

CHORUS AND SARAH
But her new album is the best one of all.

Sarah looks at her mum and smiles.

SARAH

I sure hope they stop the boats today.

MUM

Me too, Sarah.  Me too.

NARRATOR

And they all lived happily ever after.

THE END
